Alteration is the school of magic that rewrites the rules of the physical world. Its spells harden your skin like stone, light up dark crypts, let you breathe underwater, pull objects across the room and freeze enemies in place. It belongs to the Magic category, so the Mage Stone speeds up its progress, and its master spells are unlocked through Tolfdir at the College of Winterhold.
For a pure mage, Alteration is the closest thing to a suit of armor. The flesh spells combined with the Mage Armor perk let a robe-wearing caster shrug off blows, while Magic Resistance and Atronach turn hostile magic into a minor nuisance. Even warriors and thieves get value from utility spells like Detect Life and Paralyze, which make it one of the most versatile schools in the game.
How Alteration works
What Alteration covers
Alteration spells fall into a few clear families. The flesh spells – Oakflesh, Stoneflesh, Ironflesh and Ebonyflesh – raise your armor rating for 60 seconds, from 40 points at Novice up to 100 at Expert. The master spell Dragonhide goes further and lets you ignore 80% of physical damage for 30 seconds. Light spells (Candlelight, Magelight), detection spells (Detect Life, Detect Dead) and utility spells like Waterbreathing, Telekinesis and Transmute fill out the toolkit, while Paralyze and Mass Paralysis are the school’s real crowd control.
How the skill rises
Alteration improves simply by casting Alteration spells to useful effect. Utility spells like Candlelight and Transmute count every time they go off, while sustained spells such as Telekinesis and Detect Life keep feeding experience as long as you hold them. Armor spells are pickier: they only reward you when there are hostiles around, which is why people go looking for weak enemies to stand next to. Unlike older games there is no spellmaking, so every Alteration spell is learned from a spell tome, and classic effects like Open Lock, Feather and Levitation no longer exist.
Master spells
Master tomes are not on sale from the start. Once your Alteration reaches 90, Tolfdir offers the Alteration Ritual Spell quest; finishing it lets you buy Dragonhide and Mass Paralysis.
Alteration perk tree
The Alteration tree has 10 perks with 14 ranks in total. Required levels are the Alteration skill level needed for each rank.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Novice Alteration | 1 | 0 | – | Cast Novice level Alteration spells for half magicka. |

Perk guide
The spine of the tree is the cost-reduction chain: Novice (no requirement), Apprentice (25), Adept (50), Expert (75) and Master Alteration (100), each halving the magicka cost of spells at that tier. Take each one only when you actually use spells of that level – Novice is worth it immediately because it opens everything else, while Master Alteration only matters if you plan to cast Dragonhide or Mass Paralysis regularly.
For robe-wearing mages, Mage Armor (30/50/70) is the headline perk: flesh spells become two, two and a half and finally three times as strong as long as you wear no armor. That turns Ebonyflesh into a serious defensive layer, and it is the main reason pure casters can walk into melee range at all. If you wear any armor, skip it entirely.
Magic Resistance (30/50/70) blocks 10%, 20% and then 30% of hostile spell effects and is good for every build, armor or not. At the top, Atronach (100) absorbs 30% of the magicka of spells that hit you; it stacks with the Atronach Stone and Restoration’s Ward Absorb, though absorption also eats friendly spells such as a follower’s heals. Combining Magic Resistance with a Breton’s natural resistance and the Lord Stone is a well-known route to very high resistance without gear.
Stability (70) lengthens Alteration spell durations, which means fewer recasts of armor and Paralyze effects – a quality-of-life pick rather than a must. Alteration Dual Casting (20) overcharges dual-cast spells and is most useful for stronger flesh spells and Paralyze; skip it if you prefer a weapon or ward in your other hand.
A sensible order for a mage: Novice, Apprentice, Mage Armor rank 1, Magic Resistance rank 1, then raise both as you hit 50 and 70, adding Adept, Expert and finally Atronach. Alteration also pairs neatly with Enchanting: Fortify Alteration gear can drive spell costs down dramatically.
How to level Alteration fast
- Telekinesis on anything: grab an object and simply hold the spell. It drains magicka quickly but gives steady experience for every second you sustain it.
- Detect Life in a crowd: cast it in a busy town such as Whiterun on market day; the more living beings in range, the better it works. Pair it with Telekinesis in the other hand.
- Transmute ore: carry iron or silver ore and cast Transmute repeatedly. It levels Alteration and turns cheap ore into gold that you can smelt and sell as jewelry, giving Smithing a boost too.
- Flesh spells in combat: keep recasting Oakflesh or Stoneflesh during easy fights. A well-known trick is casting the Illusion spell Fury on a chicken while hidden – it turns hostile but cannot hurt you, so you can spam armor spells (casting it in plain sight earns a small bounty).
- Light spells everywhere: spam Candlelight and Magelight while exploring; slow, but free experience from the very start.
- Waterbreathing in shallow water: a cheap, safe way to tick up the skill between adventures.
- Fortify Alteration gear: enchanted robes, rings and necklaces cut costs so much that you can cast almost endlessly, and the Mage Stone plus a good night’s rest add extra learning speed.
- Trainers and books: Dravynea the Stoneweaver in Kynesgrove trains to 75 and Tolfdir to 90; five skill books such as Breathing Water add a level each.
Trainers
| Trainer | Trains up to | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dravynea the Stoneweaver | Expert (up to 75) | |
| Tolfdir | Master (up to 90) |
Each trainer can teach up to five levels per character level, and training costs more gold the higher your skill is.
Alteration skill books
Reading each of these books for the first time raises Alteration by one level:
Alteration spells
Novice
Apprentice
Adept
Expert
- Ash Rune (add-on)
- Detect Dead
- Ebonyflesh
- Paralyze
Master
Tips and notes
- Bringing Frost Salts to Dravynea in Kynesgrove raises Alteration as a quest reward, and Pantea’s Flute raises every magic school including Alteration.
- Choosing the Path of Magic with the Oghma Infinium in Discerning the Transmundane adds five points to all magic skills.
- Mage Armor only works with no armor pieces equipped; robes, hoods and jewelry are fine, but one stray helmet turns the bonus off.
- Ash Shell and Ash Rune come from the Dragonborn expansion and immobilize targets in hardened ash for 30 seconds.
- Paralyze is one of the strongest tools in the game against tough melee enemies – a paralyzed foe takes full damage while they lie helpless.
