Otar

Otar is a heavy dragon priest mask that raises fire, frost and shock resistance by 30% each, taken from Otar the Mad in Ragnvald.

Otar is a heavy dragon priest mask with an armor rating of 23 and a weight of 9. Its enchantment, Otar’s Will, gives 30% resistance to fire, frost and shock at the same time. That makes it the go-to defensive mask: dragon breath, mage spells and frost trolls’ cousins all hurt a bit less with it on. It belonged to Otar the Mad, a dragon priest with a name that says plenty.

How to get it

Head to the ruins of Ragnvald in the mountains of the Reach. The temple below is crawling with draugr, and Otar the Mad waits at the end. Expect him to be a serious fight, since he is a full dragon priest with powerful magic. Defeat him and take the mask from his remains. There is no quest attached; you can walk in whenever you feel ready.

Is it worth wearing?

If you fight a lot of mages or dragons, this is one of the most practical masks. A flat 30% to all three elements is hard to get from a single item, and it stacks with racial bonuses like the Nord frost resistance or the Dunmer fire resistance, and with other enchanted gear. It does not boost your own elemental damage, so mages chasing damage should look at the Dragonborn masks Zahkriisos, Dukaan or Ahzidal instead. It is tempered with Refined Malachite, the same material used for glass armor, which you may need to hunt for early on. For warriors in heavy armor, it is a strong all-round pick, and many players keep it in the bag as a dedicated dragon-fighting helmet.

Good to know

  • One of the eight masks needed at the Bromjunaar shrine in Labyrinthian to unlock Konahrik.
  • Masks given to followers can vanish from their inventory over time.
