Ahzidal (Mask)

Ahzidal is the fire-themed Dragon Priest mask from Solstheim, a heavy helmet that halves incoming fire damage and makes your fire spells hit 25% harder.

Ahzidal is a heavy helmet and one of the Dragon Priest masks added by the Dragonborn DLC. Put it on and you get two fire perks in one: 50% fire resistance and 25% extra damage from your fire spells. It belonged to the dragon priest Ahzidal, who has a whole barrow full of enchanted gear on Solstheim (Dragonborn).

How to get it

The mask is taken from Ahzidal himself, deep inside Kolbjorn Barrow on Solstheim. The barrow is the site of an excavation led by Ralis Sedarys in Raven Rock, and it opens up in stages as you fund his dig through the quest Unearthed. Once the final stage is open you can descend to the bottom, wake the priest and pry the mask off what remains of him.

  1. Find Ralis at the Kolbjorn Barrow dig site and agree to invest in the excavation.
  2. Keep funding and clearing each newly opened section of the barrow.
  3. Reach the deepest chamber, defeat Ahzidal and loot the mask from his remains.

The same barrow also holds the rest of Ahzidal’s Armor, so you walk out with a lot more than a face covering.

Is it worth wearing?

For a fire mage, absolutely. A flat 25% boost to fire spell damage stacks with the Augmented Flames perks in Destruction, and players happily combine it with the Fire Breath shout bonus to push fire damage very high. The 50% fire resistance is a nice bonus against fire-breathing dragons and fire mages too. As heavy armor it has an armor rating of 23 and weighs 9, which is solid for a helmet, and it can be tempered with an ebony ingot.

The catch is the same as for any element-specific mask: it only helps one school of damage. Mages who rotate fire, frost and shock may prefer something more general, while a pure pyromancer will struggle to find a better helmet. Its siblings Dukaan (frost) and Zahkriisos (shock) cover the other two elements, and Miraak’s mask is the other big Solstheim prize.

Good to know

  • It is the fire member of a trio: Ahzidal for fire, Dukaan for frost, Zahkriisos for shock.
  • As a heavy helmet it counts toward heavy armor perks, so light-armor mages lose a little perk value by wearing it.
  • Ahzidal’s Ring of Arcana, also found in Kolbjorn Barrow, lets you cast Ignite and Freeze while worn, a fun pairing with the mask.
