J’zhar is a Khajiit and a member of the College of Winterhold who signed up for the ill-fated dig at the Dwemer ruin of Alftand. By the time you arrive he is very much dead, which makes him one of the gloomier welcome committees in Skyrim.
Where to find them
His body lies inside Alftand with a steel arrow stuck in his leg. Standing over him is his brother J’darr, who is busy shouting at the corpse about missing skooma. A bloody axe, a pile of empty skooma bottles and J’zhar’s journal lie close by – put the clues together and the scene is not a happy one.

He is part of the scenery you pass through during Elder Knowledge, on the long way down towards the Great Lift at Alftand.
Personality & relationships
His journal tells a sad little story: J’zhar joined the expedition mostly to drag J’darr away from skooma and help him get clean. It did not work. The addiction followed them underground, and judging by the axe and the arrow, the brothers’ relationship ended badly.
Good to know
- If you are a College member and raise J’zhar from the dead and then kill him, you trigger the quest Rejoining the College.
