The Great Lift at Alftand is an ancient Dwemer elevator southwest of Winterhold that runs between the snowy surface and the vast underground world of Blackreach. It belongs to the same network as Alftand itself but shows up separately on your map once you’ve used it. Think of it as a back door: useless at first, priceless once it’s open.
What you’ll find
- A locked iron gate on the surface that can only be opened from the inside.
- A huge Dwemer helmet-shaped structure in Blackreach; push the button on top to lower the bars and ride the lift up.
- A lever right next to the gate at the top, above the cogs – it can be hard to spot depending on your settings.
How to unlock it
You first need to reach Blackreach the long way. That means a trip through Alftand, Raldbthar or Mzinchaleft, carrying Septimus Signus’ Attunement Sphere. Once you’re down there, ride this lift up to the surface and pull the lever beside the gate. From then on you can walk in from outside and the lift appears on the world map in its own right.
Quests
Discerning the Transmundane – the quest that sends you into Blackreach and makes all of this possible.
Tips
This is the ideal escape hatch when your pack is bursting but Blackreach still has corners to explore: ride up, sell or stash your haul, and come straight back down. The lift is notorious for occasionally trapping players in a loop of arriving at one end or the other, which can overwrite your autosaves – so make a manual save before stepping on. Also be aware that the gate can reset to closed after you leave the area, sending you back through Alftand to reopen it.
