Alain Dufont

Alain Dufont is a Breton con man turned bandit leader hiding in Raldbthar, and the Dark Brotherhood's target after he wronged Muiri.

Alain Dufont is a Breton swindler who now leads a gang of bandits in the Dwemer ruins of Raldbthar. He broke the wrong heart, and someone has paid the Dark Brotherhood to see him dead.

Where to find them

Alain sits deep inside Raldbthar, surrounded by bandit bodyguards. He’s there from the start of the game until someone deals with him. His guards always attack on sight. Alain himself sometimes stays calm if you don’t approach him, but walk up before the contract and he’ll tell you that you’ve come far enough and attack.

Quests

After Friga Shatter-Shield was murdered, Alain went to Windhelm hoping to squeeze money out of her grieving family. There he met Muiri, romanced her to get close to the Shatter-Shields, robbed them, and let her take the blame. Then he vanished into Raldbthar.

Muiri performs the Black Sacrament, and in Mourning Never Comes Astrid sends you to meet her in Markarth. Your target is Alain, with a bonus if you also kill Nilsine Shatter-Shield. If you killed Alain before talking to Muiri, she’s a little disappointed but still pays, though the Nilsine bonus is then off the table.

Personality & relationships

Alain is a smooth manipulator who used Muiri and her ties to the Shatter-Shields without a second thought. The guards in Windhelm don’t miss him either: once he’s dead, they call him bandit trash.

Good to know

  • He fights with Aegisbane, a unique enchanted warhammer. Frost resistance potions help.
  • If you can open a Master-level lock, you’ll reach a raised area behind him with lever-operated ballistae. One shot can take him out without a fair fight.
  • There’s a pool of oil on the floor near his group. Set it alight with fire and you’ll likely take a few bodyguards with it.
  • You can kill him while exploring or during other quests too, even if you choose Destroy the Dark Brotherhood instead.
  • Aegisbane can be taken from his body, but there’s no way to return it to the Shatter-Shield family.
