Robber’s Gorge

Fortified bandit toll camp straddling the road west of Morthal, with watchtowers, rock-fall traps, a chief’s cabin and a hidden underwater cove.

Robber’s Gorge is a fortified bandit camp west of Morthal, built right across the main road between Whiterun and Solitude, just west of Kilkreath Ruins. The owners have figured out the oldest business model in Skyrim: block the road and charge for passage. Whether you pay up or knock the whole operation down is between you and your wallet.

What you’ll find

  • A Bandit Chief with seven bandits under command.
  • One main entrance, several watchtowers and two rock-fall traps triggered by levers in the towers.
  • Alternative ways in: an underwater approach and a few spots where you can jump over the rocks along one side.
  • The chief’s house at the top of the camp, full of chests and desks with gold and other goods.
  • Robbers’ Cove, reached by a trapdoor at the back of the house, with chests and a water route back into the fort.
  • A corundum ore vein, plus Namira’s Rot, Blisterwort and Imp Stool.

Quests

The camp is a possible target in Amulet of the Moon, the radiant quest to recover an amulet for Kharjo.

Notable items

  • Skill book The Black Arrow, Book II on the table in the cabin at the top of the hill.
  • The Bandit Leader’s Journal, which hints at an extra chest on an island south of the fort.
  • The Robber’s Cove key, carried by the chief and also lying on a shelf near the cave entrance.
  • An Adept-locked chest underwater in the cove, with leveled weapons in and around it.
  • Nearby bonus: due west of the camp are some standing stones where a dead hunter lies, watched over by two sabre cats. Further west, partway through a mountain pass by a cart and scattered books, you can find The Legendary Sancre Tor.

Tips

Walk up on foot from the south and the highwayman in the guard tower will offer to let you through for 100 gold. Ride in on horseback and the whole camp attacks immediately – even if you paid and then hop back in the saddle. A paid toll is also void the moment you, a follower or a passing creature sets off one of their traps. If you would rather fight, the underwater entrance or the rocks along the side let you skip the trapped main approach, and the levers in the towers mean you can turn the bandits’ own rock-falls against them. Read the chief’s journal before leaving so you do not miss the island chest.
