Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon

Mountain shrine to the Daedric Prince of Destruction, sealed until Pieces of the Past ends, then guarded by Dremora and full of respawning loot.

The Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon is a Daedric shrine tucked into the mountains roughly halfway between The Lord Stone and the dragon lair Skyborn Altar. It honours Mehrunes Dagon, Prince of Destruction, Change, Revolution and Ambition, and it sits silent and locked until you finish Silus Vesuius’ quest. After that, it becomes one of the better spots in Skyrim to farm ingots and Daedra hearts – Dagon’s hospitality has a price, but so does his furniture.

What you’ll find

  • A sealed door and no worshippers until Pieces of the Past is wrapped up.
  • Leveled Dremora summoned against you at the end of the quest, whether you spare Silus or not. One of them carries the Key to Mehrunes’ Shrine.
  • Two Dremora patrolling the exterior after the quest is over.
  • An inner sanctum hung with old Mythic Dawn tapestries.
  • An unlit brazier behind the shrine that hides extra goodies such as potions, enchanted weapons and soul gems.

Quests

Everything here revolves around Pieces of the Past: gather the fragments of Mehrunes’ Razor, meet Silus at the shrine, and decide his fate. Either way you will be fighting Dremora soon after.

Notable items

  • Mehrunes’ Razor, the unique dagger that only this quest provides.
  • Enchanting skill book Catalogue of Armor Enchantments.
  • Spell tome: Firebolt.
  • Gold and ebony ingots, enchanted gear, soul gems, Daedra hearts and Daedric weapons; at higher levels, Dragonplate or Dragonscale armor and ebony armor can show up as well.

Tips

Do not kill Silus before he hands you the quest – without it you will never get the key, and the shrine stays shut for good. To reach the shrine on foot, take the path just west of the Hall of the Vigilant (look for the stone marker) and climb southwest to the steps, or use the unmarked trail south of Fort Dunstad that hairpins around a giant rock pillar near the top. The Dremora and the loot respawn after about an in-game week, but re-entering too early resets the timer. A handy trick: fast travel to The Lord Stone instead and check whether the bandits there are back – they reset on the same schedule. High-level Dremora can hit hard with enchanted glass or better, so arrive with fire resistance.

Good to know

Items you drop inside the shrine stay where you left them. The Mythic Dawn tapestries hint that the cult may have used the place as a hideout around the Oblivion Crisis.
