Potema’s Catacombs

Sealed tomb under Solitude’s Temple of the Divines, crawling with draugr and vampires, where you face the Wolf Queen during The Wolf Queen Awakened.

Potema’s Catacombs is a vast hidden maze of rooms and corridors beneath Solitude, reached through the cellar of the Temple of the Divines near Castle Dour. It is sealed off until you accept The Wolf Queen Awakened, and for good reason – this is where the spirit of Potema Septim, the Wolf Queen, gathers her undead court.

What you’ll find

  • Enemies – draugr and vampires.
  • Sublocations – the Secluded Chamber, Potema’s Refuge and Potema’s Sanctum.
  • Crafting stops – a grindstone and an Alchemy Lab in the last two rooms before Potema’s Refuge.
  • Ingredients – Hanging Moss grows in abundance in the Sanctum.

Quests

The Wolf Queen Awakened brings you here to stop Potema’s return. It is the only intended way in; the rest of the time the door stays shut.

Notable items

  • Skill book Surfeit of Thieves (Lockpicking), on a table in the room with a vampire.
  • Skill book Legend of Krately House (Sneak), in the end chest in Potema’s Sanctum.
  • A leveled bow in the Sanctum.
  • Potema’s Skull.

Good to know

Potema’s Skull is only a regular item if you somehow get in before the quest starts. Players also report that Potema’s chamber can occasionally glow green without the usual lightning; the draugr still open the door, but she never shows up and the skull is simply lying there – an anticlimax, but a cheap one.

Tips

Pack fire and Restoration magic; draugr and vampires both dislike them, and Vampire’s Bane earns its keep down here. Use the grindstone and alchemy lab before you push into the Refuge – it’s your last calm moment. Don’t wander the catacombs before the quest is active: if Silana Petreia panics and opens the sealed door early, the quest may become impossible to finish. Reading Biography of the Wolf Queen beforehand gives the whole trip some extra spooky context.
