Four Skull Lookout is an above-ground Nordic ruin perched on a cliff south of Karthwasten and east of Markarth. From up here you get a sweeping view of the Karth River valley – which is probably why a bunch of bandits decided it was the perfect hideout. Unusually for old ruins in this part of Skyrim, it is bandits and not Forsworn who have moved in.
What you’ll find
- A large stone structure with a single domed room – compact, so expect the bandits to come at you all at once.
- A bandit camp in and around the ruin.
- A silver ore vein out back, near a tree by the cliff edge.
- A bird’s nest tucked under a ledge behind the ruin, holding a Pine Thrush Egg.
- A Shrine of Zenithar on an overlook just to the west.
Quests
- Destruction Ritual Spell: this is the last stop for the ritual’s pedestals.
- Bounty quests: a bounty picked up in Markarth can ask you to clear out the bandits causing trouble here.
Notable items
- Silver ore vein behind the ruin.
- Pine Thrush Egg in the nest under the ledge.
- Shrine of Zenithar nearby, if you need a blessing on your way out.
Tips
The cliff-top position works both ways: the bandits can see you coming along the valley, but you can also pick them off from range before they close in. Once they are dealt with, walk around the back – the silver vein and the egg are easy to miss if you only poke your head into the domed room.
If you have the Destruction Ritual on the go, treat this as the finale and come prepared to finish it here. And if you were just passing through, grab the bounty in Markarth first – there is no reason to clear the place for free.
Good to know
Despite the name, nobody seems to have counted the skulls. The real treasure is the view across the river toward Karthwasten, which is arguably worth the climb on its own.
