Greywater Grotto is a cold cave tucked into the hills southwest of Helgen and west of Fort Neugrad. A bandit gang once used it as a hideout, but the local wildlife had other plans – the bandits are gone and the animals have taken the place over. It’s a short, straightforward dungeon with some handy mining on the side.
What you’ll find
- Wolves and ice wolves, a snowy sabre cat and an ice wraith.
- A frozen lake inside the cave and a small waterfall.
- The remains of the bandits’ occupation, including a dead bandit at the far end next to a chest with random loot.
- Three ore veins: corundum near the frozen lake, iron to the right as you descend from the first chamber, and gold at the end of the cave by the dead bandit.

The grotto is a possible target for Animal Extermination, one of the radiant jobs handed out by the Companions.

Tips
Bring a pickaxe – the three veins make this a nice detour for smiths. Mind the mixed wildlife – a sabre cat and an ice wraith hit a lot harder than the wolves. Avoid stepping into the puddle under the small waterfall: there is a known glitch that can trap you under a cap of ice. And if you’re planning to do Companions work, it may be worth waiting until a contract sends you here before clearing it, since an already cleared grotto can make the extermination job hard to finish.
Good to know
The dead bandit and his chest at the far end are all that’s left of the original gang – a quiet reminder that in Skyrim even the wolves can run a successful hostile takeover. Pair a visit with nearby Fort Neugrad for a full afternoon of looting.
