Wrathman

Purple-skinned, draugr-like warriors of the Soul Cairn who swing battleaxes and greatswords, and can be conjured with their own spell tome.

Wrathmen are what you get when a draugr spends eternity in the Soul Cairn: gaunt, purple-skinned undead warriors who wander that bleak plane of Oblivion in the Dawnguard add-on. They are the heavy hitters of the Cairn’s local population, reliably armed with two-handed weapons, either battleaxes or greatswords, and at higher levels those can even be dragonbone. With 800 health they take a lot of punishment before going down.

The Soul Cairn is visited during the Dawnguard storyline, so most players meet wrathmen while travelling with Serana through that realm. They sit alongside the other Cairn dwellers such as the boneman and the mistman, and the guardian keepers.

Where to find them

Wrathmen appear only in the Soul Cairn. Their level scales from 1 to 40 with the player, so they remain a threat whenever you arrive.

Conjuring a Wrathman

The Soul Cairn also hides a spell tome for Conjure Wrathman, letting you summon one of these brutes as a temporary ally. It belongs to a set of Cairn summons that also includes Conjure Boneman and Conjure Mistman.

Notes

  • Wrathmen can be soul trapped, and the soul gem they carry comes out filled if you do.
  • Their soul size is listed as leveled rather than a fixed size.
  • Search a fallen wrathman and you will usually find either a random soul gem or a soul husk, both fitting souvenirs from a realm built around captured souls.
  • Because they scale up to level 40 and can wield dragonbone weapons late in the game, a high-level visit to the Cairn makes them noticeably more dangerous than on an early trip.
  • A Soul Cairn writing, The Book of Life and Service, praises the wrathmen for carrying their rage through the ages.

Abilities & attacks

  • Two-handed melee with battleaxes or greatswords.
  • May carry dragonbone weapons at higher levels.
  • High health (800) and stamina (475).

How to beat it

Treat a wrathman like a tough draugr with a big two-hander: block or sidestep its heavy swings and punish the recovery, or keep it at range with spells and arrows. Its large health pool makes this a slow fight, so let Serana or a summon hold its attention. Casting Soul Trap before the kill turns its soul gem into a filled one.
