Udefrykte

The Udefrykte is a unique, unusually strong troll that lurks in an ice cave beneath the Dawnstar Sanctuary during the quest The Cure for Madness.

The Udefrykte is a one-of-a-kind troll that has made its home in an icy cave attached to the Dawnstar Sanctuary. You meet it during the Dark Brotherhood quest The Cure for Madness, while tracking down Cicero. The jester himself mentions the beast in his journal, boasting that the big ugly creature would happily eat him if it could only find him first.

At a glance it looks like an ordinary troll, but the details give it away: large, golden-green eyes instead of black ones, dark green hair and grey-purple skin in place of the usual grey hide. It is also a good deal stronger than its common cousins, strong enough to kill a horker, which many trolls cannot manage.

Because it is a unique creature tied to a single quest location, there is only one Udefrykte to fight. That makes it less of a recurring hazard and more of a set-piece guardian guarding its corner of the Sanctuary while you hunt for Cicero.

Where to find it

The Udefrykte lives in an ice cave within the Dawnstar Sanctuary, near the town of Dawnstar. According to Cicero, the cave was not part of the Sanctuary’s original layout but a “forced addition”, which hints that the troll dug its way in. There is a chest in its lair that holds three fire attack scrolls, which is handy given the creature’s weakness.

Lore

The name is a nod to earlier games: the Udyrfrykte in Bloodmoon, found in a similar setting, and the Uderfrykte Matron in Oblivion. The spelling varies a little each time. The name draws on Norwegian, where “udyr” means beast and “frykt” means fear.

Abilities & attacks

  • Powerful troll melee attacks
  • Considerably stronger than an ordinary troll

How to beat it

Like every troll, the Udefrykte is weak to fire, so Destruction fire spells are the simplest answer. If you prefer stealth, you can sneak attack it, or slip past unseen to the chest and grab the three fire attack scrolls first. Sneaking combined with archery can deal heavy damage before it reaches you.
