Bone Hawk

Bone Hawks are dark, skull-faced hawks that circle Castle Volkihar in Dawnguard; their parts are used for the Bone Hawk Amulet.

The Bone Hawk is a grim little addition from Dawnguard: shaped like an ordinary hawk, but with blackened plumage and a bare skull where its head should be. It suits its home perfectly, because these birds are almost always seen wheeling over the vampire stronghold of the Volkihar Clan. They are not a threat to you; the reason to care about them is what they leave behind.

Where to find them

Bone Hawks typically circle Castle Volkihar, the island fortress off the coast of Haafingar. You will spot them overhead on the approach to the castle and around its walls, whichever side of the Dawnguard conflict you end up on.

Bringing one down

Because they stay airborne, Bone Hawks have to be taken with arrows or ranged spells. Like normal hawks, they also drop out of the sky when hit by Kyne’s Peace, which makes collecting them much easier than trying to snipe a moving target against the clouds.

Notes

Each bird yields three crafting parts: a Bone Hawk Claw, Bone Hawk Feathers and a Bone Hawk Skull. Together they are the materials for the Bone Hawk Amulet, so anyone planning to craft one should gather a few extra while visiting the castle. Hunting ordinary hawks, by comparison, gives Hawk Feathers and Hawk Beaks for Alchemy rather than crafting parts.

The source material lists no level, health or soul data for this creature, which is not surprising for something that spends its life in the air above a vampire castle.

How to beat it

Bone Hawks do not fight back; the challenge is hitting them. Use a bow or a ranged spell while they circle, or shout Kyne’s Peace to bring them down the way you would a normal hawk.
