The Forgemaster

A unique, magma-heated Dwarven Centurion that rises from the lava to guard the Aetherium Forge in the Ruins of Bthalft during Lost to the Ages.

The Forgemaster is the final guardian of the Aetherium Forge, a one-of-a-kind Dwarven Centurion that lurks in the magma beneath the Ruins of Bthalft. It only emerges once you have dealt with every other Dwemer machine in the forge chamber, hauling itself out of the lava behind the forge with its plating still glowing yellow-hot. Beat it, and the ancient forge is finally yours to use.

What makes it different

The Forgemaster is larger and tougher than any ordinary centurion. Where a normal centurion vents scalding steam, this one breathes fire like a dragon, and simply standing close to it burns you over time. Its long soak in magma also flips the usual Dwemer defences: unlike other animunculi it shrugs off fire completely, yet it is vulnerable to frost. When it finally falls, the armor cools and the machine shrinks back down to the size of a regular centurion.

Its level is radiant, scaling between 24 and 50 with you, so its health ranges from roughly 850 to almost 1,300 and its magicka and stamina climb with it.

Where to find it

The Forgemaster appears in a single place: the Aetherium Forge chamber at the bottom of the Ruins of Bthalft. You meet it at the climax of the Dawnguard quest Lost to the Ages. It is the last enemy standing between you and the forge, and you cannot craft until it is destroyed.

Notes

  • Metal scraps looted from its body can be smelted into ingots like those from any other centurion, for example Dwarven Metal Ingots.
  • Like other Dwemer constructs it has no soul to trap, and it also resists Vampiric Drain.
  • Related machines: Dwarven Sphere, Dwarven Ballista.

Abilities & attacks

  • Fire Breath and Fireball Breath instead of the usual centurion steam
  • Burns anyone standing close to it
  • Heavy centurion melee attacks

How to beat it

Clear every other Dwemer construct first, because the Forgemaster only rises afterwards, and heal up before it does. Fire is useless against it, so switch to frost spells, frost-enchanted weapons or a Weakness to Frost poison. Avoid hugging it in melee, since its heat burns you over time; ranged attacks while sidestepping its fire breath are the safer approach, and Resist Fire potions help a lot.
