Mirmulnir

The dragon that attacks Whiterun’s Western Watchtower in Dragon Rising, and the first dragon whose soul the Dragonborn absorbs in the main quest.

Mirmulnir is the dragon that turns an escaped prisoner from Helgen into the Last Dragonborn. He descends on the Western Watchtower just outside Whiterun, and the fight against him is many players’ first real dragon battle. When he falls, the Dragonborn absorbs his soul in front of a crowd of guards, and the main questline changes course from there.

His name in the dragon tongue is Mir-Mul-Nir, translated as “Allegiance-Strong-Hunt”. He fights with teeth, claws and the Fire Breath shout. His listed spells also include Frost Breath.

Where to find them

Mirmulnir appears once, at the Western Watchtower in Whiterun Hold, during Dragon Rising. After news of the attack reaches Dragonsreach, Jarl Balgruuf the Greater sends his housecarl Irileth, the Dragonborn and a squad of guards to deal with it. The dragon shows up once everyone has gathered at the ruined tower.

Lore

The Atlas of Dragons, a copy of which sits in Sky Haven Temple, records Mirmulnir as one of very few dragons that escaped the Blades. He was last seen in The Reach in 2E 212 and is not heard of again until 4E 201. The atlas counts him among four named dragons believed to be still alive.

He is talkative in battle. He promises that his overlord will devour your souls in Sovngarde, admits he had forgotten what fine sport mortals can be, and calls you a worthy foe whose defeat will bring him honour. His final words are a startled “Dovahkiin? No!”

Notes

Abilities & attacks

  • Bite and claw attacks
  • Fire Breath shout
  • Frost Breath shout (listed among his spells)
  • Flies and strafes the battlefield between landings

How to beat it

Use the watchtower’s walls and stairs as cover from his breath, and let Irileth and the guards draw his attention while you fire arrows or spells whenever he hovers or lands. The guards can land the killing blow themselves, so make sure your own attacks are the ones finishing him. Steady ranged fire as his health gets low is the safest way to do that.
