Ancient Dragons are among the oldest and hardiest dragons the Dragonborn can face, and the most powerful dragon type in the base game. When one lands near you, the light-hearted part of the adventure is over for a while.
When they appear
They are typically met after the Dragonborn passes level 35 and turn up much more often from around level 45. That said, an unlucky player can run into one as early as level 23. Lower-level players get Blood Dragons, Frost Dragons and Elder Dragons first, so an Ancient Dragon is usually a sign that your level has climbed high.
Appearance
Ancient Dragons are built much like Elder Dragons but recoloured: where Elders are bronze and yellow, Ancients are tan and pinkish. They keep the black blotches on the head crests, wings and tail. Their back is spinier, with what looks like three rows of short, stubby spikes running down the spine to a spade-shaped tail. Only Legendary variants are larger.
Where to find them
Ancient Dragons have no fixed lair of their own; they are part of the regular dragon encounters across Skyrim and show up once your level is high enough. Like other true dragons they carry a dragon soul that you absorb when you kill one.
Notes
- Unlike many dragon types, they have no fixed element: an Ancient Dragon may use either Fire Breath or Frost Breath.
- The source mentions that a dragon labelled Ancient may in fact look and fight like a frost dragon, with large back spikes and Frost Breath, possibly when the player is at a low level.
