Stalhrim Source

Hidden Nordic burial ground east of Broken Tusk Mine with ten Stalhrim-packed sarcophagi – thirty pieces of the rare ice ore that regrow every ten days.

The Stalhrim Source is a landmark on Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It lies east of Broken Tusk Mine in the snowy north-west of the island and stays unmarked on your map until you’ve earned it. Think of it as Solstheim’s premium quarry: an old burial ground stuffed with Stalhrim, the enchanted ice everyone wants for top-tier gear.

What you’ll find

  • Ten sarcophagi encased in Stalhrim. Each deposit yields three pieces when mined with an Ancient Nordic Pickaxe – 30 pieces in total.
  • Two of the deposits are mostly buried in snow on the far side of the stairs, but can still be mined. One sarcophagus is so deep in snow that only the draugr’s head pokes out.
  • A draugr corpse inside each deposit, with small amounts of gold, a piece of armor or a low-level weapon to loot.
  • Possibly a dragon circling overhead.

Quests

A New Source of Stalhrim – Baldor Iron-Shaper reveals this spot as thanks for rescuing him from the Thalmor. Once the quest is done, the Source appears as a landmark on your map.

Notable items

  • 30 Stalhrim per full harvest – enough for a good chunk of Stalhrim armor or weapons.
  • If you’ve finished No Stone Unturned, each draugr carries up to five gems, usually flawless ones.

Tips

The deposits regrow ten days after your last visit – but coming back early resets the timer, so stay away and let the ice do its thing. Want to mine faster? Use Elemental Fury and “attack” the veins; the pickaxe must be unenchanted for this to work. Another trick is to take dual-wield perks and hold a dagger in your off hand while swinging the pickaxe. Keep an eye on the sky while you work, since a dragon may be patrolling, and you’ll be standing in the open with a mining tool. If a deposit is visible but can’t be mined, leaving and coming back, reloading, or taking a swing at it with the pickaxe usually sorts it out.
