The Tower Stone

Clifftop standing stone between Winterhold and Dawnstar that lets you open any Expert or lower lock once a day without picking it.

The Tower Stone is a standing stone on a mountain cliff between Winterhold and Dawnstar, directly west of the College of Winterhold. If you’ve already found Hob’s Fall Cave, you can see the stone from its entrance, up on the cliff to the north-northwest. It’s a favourite of thieves, burglars and anyone who keeps snapping lockpicks.

What you’ll find

  • The Tower Stone, standing on a clifftop with a fine view of the coast.
  • Small stunted trees with bird’s nests, each of which may hold a random egg.
  • Two quicksilver ore veins on the way up to the stone.
  • On the glacier just north of the stone, a skeleton next to a flag, with a chest and a copy of The Knights of the Nine.

The blessing

Once a day, the Tower Stone lets you open a lock of Expert level or lower automatically – no lockpick, no fiddly minigame. Master locks still need the old-fashioned approach. As with all standing stones, choosing this one replaces your current blessing.

Tips

The classic use is a jailbreak. The evidence and belongings chests in prisons have Expert locks, so you can pop open the one holding your gear, grab your lockpicks and then pick the other. Freedom, courtesy of a big rock. The ability also doesn’t count towards the “Locks Picked” statistic, if you care about that kind of thing. Don’t skip the quicksilver on the way up: it’s needed for Dwarven smithing, and veins aren’t common. A word of warning – coming at the stone from below along the shoreline can apparently stop it from being discovered properly, so take the proper path up the cliff.

Good to know

The lonely skeleton and flag on the nearby glacier make a nice little detour – somebody clearly planted that flag with pride and then didn’t make it home.
