Steamcrag Camp

Giant camp south-east of Windhelm where a lone giant has official permission to stay – unless the Jarl decides he’s become a problem.

Steamcrag Camp is a giant’s encampment south-east of Windhelm. What makes it unusual is the paperwork: an Official Warning pinned to a nearby signpost explains that the giant living here has been granted leave to keep his camp, and that citizens should keep their distance and leave him alone. Skyrim bureaucracy, ladies and gentlemen.

What you’ll find

  • A giant who will defend his camp if provoked.
  • A big campfire with a giant club resting on a rock beside it.
  • The signpost with the Official Warning to travelers.
  • East of the camp, by the side of the road: a wrecked Khajiit caravan with two dead Khajiit and a dead horse, plus an adept-level chest, a knapsack and a potion at the base of the wreck.

Quests

Kill the Giant – despite the sign, the Jarl may post a bounty asking you to deal with this giant.

Notable items

  • Giant Club near the fire – purely decorative; you can’t pick it up.
  • Adept chest at the wrecked caravan east of camp.

Tips

If you don’t have the bounty, there’s no need to fight – the giant is officially tolerated, and passing at a respectful distance costs you nothing. If you do take him on, keep moving and use ranged attacks; a giant’s swing can launch an under-leveled hero into low orbit.

Make sure to visit the ruined caravan east of the camp, where the chest and knapsack are easy pickings. Judging by the warning sign and how close it is to the camp, the caravan very likely met the giant before its drivers had read the notice.

Keep an eye on the sky as well. The camp lies near the dragon lair at Bonestrewn Crest, and its dragon can be seen circling overhead – so a giant fight here can quickly turn into a three-way brawl.

Good to know

The club by the fire can be handed to a follower with a command, but it won’t show in their inventory – although they may occasionally be seen swinging it.
