Morvunskar is an old fort southwest of Windhelm, now packed with conjurers and an assortment of fire, ice and storm mages. Most players end up here at the climax of the Daedric quest A Night to Remember, but it’s worth a visit any time for the crafting stations, the loot and the satisfying job of evicting a nest of rude wizards. Mara’s Eye Pond lies just to the southwest.
What you’ll find
- Conjurers plus fire, ice and storm mages throughout the fort – expect a lot of summoned help.
- A forge room near the entrance where a disgruntled conjurer has been stuck on smithing duty.
- Naris the Wicked in the lower dungeon, a mage who enjoys tormenting prisoners a little too much.
- A Shrine of Dibella in a room in the lower section, past the fire mage and guarded by a few mages.
- Crafting: forge, workbench, arcane enchanter, tanning rack and a cooking spot.
Quests
- A Night to Remember – the tower is the final stop, where a portal to Misty Grove appears.
- Also tied to Arniel’s Endeavor, The Forgemaster’s Fingers and the Companions’ Totems of Hircine quest.
- Lost Relic and Hunting the Monster (Dawnguard), and Azra’s Staffs (Dragonborn).
Notable items
- Cherim’s Heart of Anequina (Smithing) on the table in the forge room.
- Mystery of Talara, Book III (Destruction) on a bookshelf where you meet Naris the Wicked.
- The Aetherium Wars (Dragonborn) on a bookshelf in the room with the arcane enchanter.
Tips
Sneak through the first rooms and you can eavesdrop on two conjurers moaning about forge duty – “we use magic, not weapons” – and gossiping about Naris and the prisoners downstairs. Later, Naris can be heard muttering to himself about how his victims die too quickly. Lovely chap. Put him out of business with a sneak attack if you can.
During A Night to Remember, loot the chest and lockbox near the stairs before you trigger the portal, because the gate can block access to them afterwards. If you come back later, Sanguine himself may be hanging around, sometimes brawling with the remaining mages – and since he can’t be hurt, he tends to win, which makes the second half of the fort a lot easier.
Good to know
You can visit Morvunskar whenever you like, but the portal to Misty Grove only exists while the quest is active.
