Fort Amol

Stone fort where the White and Darkwater rivers meet, northeast of Ivarstead, first held by conjurers and later fought over in the Civil War.

Fort Amol is a stone fortress where the White River meets the Darkwater River, northeast of Ivarstead and just off the road to Whiterun. When you first arrive, conjurers and elemental mages have taken it over and apparently killed the old guards. Clear them out and the fort later fills up with Stormcloak soldiers, making it a key stronghold in the Civil War.

What you’ll find

  • Elemental mages and conjurers holding the fort on your first visit.
  • A courtyard with a forge, a workbench and an alchemy lab, plus a Shrine of Julianos nearby – maybe the mages were fans.
  • A cellar in the main keep with an arcane enchanter, potions and an adept-locked chest containing Novice Robes of Restoration.
  • Fort Amol Prison, where the mages may keep captured vampires in cages.
  • A breach in the eastern outer wall, letting you skip the front gate entirely.
  • Grim decorations: a big cross with shackles on the highest tower, and a Stormcloak’s body ringed by candles on the north tower.

Quests

In The Battle for Fort Amol you help the Legion retake the fort, clearing the way for a direct attack on Windhelm. Once the mages are gone, Stormcloaks garrison the fort – usually after the Imperial Battle for Whiterun, when forts in Stormcloak-held land are restaffed ahead of Reunification of Skyrim. You can explore the fort and the prison fully before getting the quest.

Notable items

  • Catalogue of Armor Enchantments – Enchanting skill book in the cellar.
  • Spell tome Bound Bow, hidden in a bucket under a lantern in the prison’s northwest room, next to a Scroll of Blizzard, a magicka draught and soul gems.
  • A flawless amethyst.

Tips

Sneaky players should use the gap in the east wall – it lets you pick off mages one by one. Don’t pick fights with the caged vampires through the bars unless you fancy catching vampirism. If you’re hunting that Bound Bow tome, check the bucket; it’s the sort of hiding place only a mage with too much time would choose. And try not to enter as a werewolf – the loading screen may freeze.

Good to know

The Abandoned Prison sits just northwest across the river, and Darkwater Crossing lies a short way east, so you can tie all three into one outing.
