Glass Greatsword

A two-handed glass blade with 21 base damage, forged from refined malachite and moonstone once you have the Glass Smithing perk.

The Glass Greatsword is the two-handed member of the glass weapon family, sitting above Elven and below Ebony on the material ladder. With 21 base damage it hits a little harder than an Elven Greatsword, yet at 22 weight it is still lighter than most high-end steel you will be dragging around.

The green, translucent blade is built from refined malachite, and look closely at the middle of it: the inlay is shaped a lot like the eye on a peacock feather. It is a natural pick for anyone running a two-handed build in Glass Armor.

Where to find

  • Plain glass greatswords start showing up around level 27, and enchanted ones from level 28.
  • Check blacksmiths and general goods merchants once you reach that level.
  • Enemies and NPCs may carry one, and it can turn up as random loot in chests or lying around the world.
  • Fixed spot: a display case in the living quarters of Jorrvaskr, by Kodlak’s room, provided you are high enough level.

Crafting and upgrading

Crafting at a forge: 2 × Refined Malachite, 2 × Refined Moonstone, 3 × Leather Strips. Requires the Glass Smithing Smithing perk.

Improving at a grindstone: 1 × Refined Malachite. The Arcane Blacksmith perk doubles the improvement.

Tips and notes

  • Improve it at a grindstone with refined malachite; the Glass Smithing perk doubles the gain.
  • Display quirks: on PC it sits off-centre on shield racks and plaques, and on Switch a weapon rack can show it floating upside-down above the rack.
  • On PC and Xbox 360 it uses a different swing sound from the other greatswords, so your ears are not lying.
