Shearpoint is a dragon lair perched high in the mountains west-southwest of Windhelm, due west of Irkngthand and northeast of Whiterun. It is the only dragon lair in the game where the resident dragon has company: a dragon priest named Krosis sleeps beside the Word Wall. Come for the shout, stay for the mask, and try not to get flambéed from two directions at once.
What you’ll find
- A leveled dragon circling the peak. As with other lairs, it only turns up once you have finished Dragon Rising.
- Krosis, a dragon priest who rises from his tomb near the wall and fights alongside (or after) the dragon.
- A Word Wall for Throw Voice, a shout that confuses nearby characters. Unusually, this wall hands you all three words in one go instead of the usual single word.
- Random loot on Krosis’s body, plus his signature mask.
Quests
Shearpoint can be the target of a jarl’s “Kill the Dragon” bounty, and it ties into the main-story dragon hunt via Dragon Seekers. It is also a possible destination for Find the Source of Power. Hold guards can point you here too, which marks it on your map.
Notable items
- Krosis – a light armor dragon priest mask that boosts Lockpicking, Archery and Alchemy by 20% each. A thief-archer-alchemist’s dream hat.
- The Throw Voice Word Wall (all three words).
Tips
The climb is the real boss here. One route is to fast travel to Fellglow Keep, head east until a trail opens up to the northwest, and follow it to the summit. Another is to start from Raldbthar or Irkngthand and work your way up and west, since all three share the same mountain range – a horse makes the scramble far less painful. Try to split the fight: deal with the dragon in the open first, then step near the tomb to wake Krosis on your own terms. Bring frost and fire resistance if you can, because a dragon breathing on you while a priest lobs spells is nobody’s idea of a picnic.
Good to know
The wall’s inscription is a memorial: someone called Modir the Far raised the stone for his brother Oskar the Fool, whose voice was too weak to match the mighty Thu’um of his clan. Fitting, then, that it teaches the shout for throwing your voice.
