Refugees’ Rest is a crumbling watchtower out on the Dunmeth Pass, east of Windhelm and close to the border with Morrowind. These days nobody is resting here except whatever cold-loving beast has moved in, but the tower is a quick, rewarding stop for anyone walking the pass – and a quiet piece of Dunmer history if you take a moment to read what’s lying around.
What you’ll find
- A pair of hostile residents – depending on your luck these are frost trolls, ice wraiths or snow bears.
- Two books lying on the ground inside the ruin.
- An adept-locked chest with leveled loot up on the roof.
- A small pedestal outside the tower holding Decree of Monument, which tells the story of the place.
- A small Dunmer graveyard a little further to the east.
Notable items
- Ancestors and the Dunmer
- The Firsthold Revolt
- Decree of Monument (on the pedestal outside)
Tips
Check what’s living in the tower before you charge in. Frost trolls regenerate and hit hard, so fire is your friend; ice wraiths are fast and hard to spot against the snow, so keep your eyes on the ground-level shimmer. Once the residents are dealt with, head for the roof – the chest up there needs an adept lockpick, so bring a few spares if your Lockpicking is still at the “bent pin” stage.
Don’t rush off before reading the pedestal. It’s a short text, and it turns a random ruin into a place with a story.
Good to know
Around 4E 20, after the eruption of Red Mountain, this tower served as a meeting point and information hub for Dunmer refugees fleeing Morrowind in search of shelter in Skyrim. The little graveyard nearby suggests that not all of them made it much further. It’s a sobering backdrop to the dark elves you’ll later meet in Windhelm.
