Helgen Keep

The Imperial prison and barracks beneath Helgen through which you escape Alduin’s attack, later reclaimed by bandits and worth revisiting for missed loot.

Helgen Keep is the fort at the heart of Helgen, northeast of Falkreath. It served as both the town prison and a barracks for the Imperial Legion – right up until Alduin burned the whole town down. It is the first dungeon you ever run through, and later a quiet place to pick up whatever you missed while fleeing a dragon.

What you’ll find

  • Prison cells and a torture chamber above a surprisingly large network of caves.
  • An escape route through the caves that ends in a small hole near the main road – your ticket out.
  • During Unbound: Imperial soldiers if you follow Ralof, Stormcloaks if you follow Hadvar.
  • On a later return: possibly bandits, who respawn gradually over time.
  • A chest with leveled loot in the chamber where you fought archers during Unbound.

Quests

Unbound runs straight through the keep as you escape Helgen. Who you fight inside depends on who you followed when the dragon attacked, and the caves beneath the cells are what finally get you out alive – without that small hole at the end, the escape would have been a very short story.

Notable items

  • Spell tome Sparks, next to the dead mage in the torture room.
  • The Black Arrow, v2, on a shelf in the torture room – it only appears once bandits have moved in.
  • The book Brief History of the Empire, Book I.

Tips

Come back later in the game: the town lies in burned ruins, corpses hold a few coins or bone meal, and depending on how long you’ve been away the keep is either empty or full of bandits. The cave passage after the torture chamber may still be blocked by rubble, or cleared and spanned by a wooden bridge. Necromancers, note that the dead mage in the locked cage can be raised with Dead Thrall and his corpse never disappears – unlike the caged Stormcloak in rags, who resists it.
