Serana is an ancient, pure-blooded Nord vampire and the daughter of Lord Harkon and Valerica. She is one of the “Daughters of Coldharbour”, which puts her right at the centre of the Dawnguard add-on’s story. Ask almost any Skyrim player who their favourite follower is, and Serana’s name comes up fast.
How to recruit Serana
You find Serana sealed away in Dimhollow Crypt early in the Dawnguard questline, and she travels with you through most of the story. After the final Dawnguard quest, “Kindred Judgment”, she can be recruited as a permanent follower – whichever side you chose.
As a follower
Serana is a powerful mage: she raises the dead, drains life, throws ice spikes and fights well with a dagger when needed. She levels with you up to level 50 and is essential, so she cannot die. She also has a huge amount of unique dialogue and comments on places, quests and even your choices – which is a big part of why players love her.
Good to know
- Serana cannot be married.
- She will not take part in crimes – she is a vampire, but not a thief.
- After the Dawnguard story, you can talk to her about curing her vampirism.
