Mercer Frey is the Breton Guildmaster of the Thieves Guild in Riften. From your very first job he is impatient, sour and visibly unhappy with your progress – and as the questline goes on, you find out why.
Spoiler: the truth about Mercer
Mercer took over the guild after the previous Guildmaster, Gallus, was murdered – a crime blamed on Gallus’ partner Karliah. In Snow Veil Sanctum, during “Speaking With Silence”, you learn that Mercer killed Gallus himself, had been skimming the guild’s treasury, and betrayed both the guild and the Daedric Prince Nocturnal. He tries to kill you there and again in “Blindsighted”, and he is the main antagonist of the guild’s story.
Good to know
- He owns Riftweald Manor in Riften, though you never actually find him there.
- He is a master of sneaking and swordplay, helped by the stolen Skeleton Key.
- A well-known trick: during “Speaking With Silence” he will keep following you if you leave Snow Veil Sanctum, as an unkillable extra companion until Karliah is found.
