Barbas looks like a friendly dog. He is not just a dog. He is the companion of the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile – and he talks. You will find him on the road outside Falkreath, where a guard or the local Lod will tell you about a dog who has lost his master.
A Daedra’s Best Friend
Barbas asks for your help finding his master and leads you to Haemar’s Shame, a shrine of Clavicus Vile. Along the way, he warns you never to accept a deal from his master – those deals always end badly for the mortal involved. At the shrine, Clavicus Vile offers you a choice: kill Barbas for the Rueful Axe, or reunite them and receive a Daedric artifact.
As a follower
Barbas follows you throughout the quest, and as long as the quest is not finished, he stays with you. He is invulnerable to all damage except from the Rueful Axe, which makes him a tireless sidekick in fights.
Good to know
- Barbas cannot be married. He is a dog. A Daedric dog, but still.
- Hearing a dog give sensible life advice is one of Skyrim’s small joys.
