Maximian Axius was an Imperial soldier posted to Fort Frostmoth on Solstheim in the early Fourth Era, serving under General Falx Carius. Today he is a pile of bones crushed under a pillar (Dragonborn), and his story survives only in the letters he never got to send home.
Where to find them
Inside Fort Frostmoth, go right and down the stairs, then take two quick right turns. His remains lie in a small alcove beside some sacks. His knapsack holds the first three letters to his wife, and the fourth lies next to his body. He also carries a little leveled loot.
Personality & relationships
Maximian was a family man with a wife, Selina, and two children, Siricus and Atia. His letters start out keen: he enjoys the work and waits eagerly for the supply ship so he can send his daily notes home. Over a few weeks the tone darkens. His comrade Euphemius is killed by rieklings, and Maximian begins to feel that the Empire has simply dumped the garrison on a frozen island and forgotten about it. Only his loyalty and General Carius’s morning speeches keep him going.
The last letter describes the devastation as Red Mountain erupted during the Red Year. Fittingly, his final thoughts are of home, his family and the Empire.
Good to know
Read the letters in order – together they make one of the sadder little stories hidden on Solstheim, and they add a lot of context to the ruined fort around you.
