Azra’s Staffs

Neloth wants a staff made by the ancient shadowmage Azra Nightwielder, hidden in a random dungeon in Skyrim or on Solstheim.

Azra’s Staffs is a side quest from the Dragonborn DLC in which the eccentric Telvanni wizard Neloth reveals a private hobby: he collects magical staffs, and above all those crafted by Azra Nightwielder. His divinations have pinpointed one of them, and since Neloth does not do fieldwork if he can help it, the job falls to you. The staff can be hidden almost anywhere, from mainland Skyrim to Solstheim.

How to start

  • Travel to Tel Mithryn, Neloth’s mushroom tower on Solstheim.
  • Ask Neloth whether you can help with his research. He brushes the research aside for now but mentions a more personal favour: retrieving an Azra Nightwielder staff.
  • The quest requires a Conjuration skill of 40.

Walkthrough

Learn about Azra Nightwielder

If you are curious, ask Neloth who Azra was. He describes him as the very first shadowmage, a legendary figure in magic and an early pioneer of staff enchanting. By modern standards his techniques are crude, Neloth admits, but each of his staffs has taught Neloth something new, and they carry sentimental value for him.

Get the staff

The target dungeon is chosen at random when the quest starts, and your journal names it. The staff always sits inside a chest. The location will be one of these dungeon types: bandit camp, dragon lair, dragon priest lair, draugr crypt, Falmer hive, Forsworn camp, hagraven nest, vampire lair or warlock lair. The source lists around fifty candidates, among them Ansilvund, Bleak Falls Barrow, Bloodlet Throne, Embershard Mine, Fellglow Keep, Folgunthur, Harmugstahl, Kagrenzel, Ragnvald, Sightless Pit, Sunderstone Gorge, Valthume, Volskygge, Volunruud and Yngol Barrow. If the pick is Tolvald’s Cave, expect a long trek, as the chest lies beyond Tolvald’s Gap in Tolvald’s Crossing. Falkreath Watchtower is also a possible site, although the journal calls it Crossroads Watchtower.

The staff itself is one of eleven variants, including Azra’s Staff of Charming, Daedric Command, Dread Zombies, Expulsion, Fear, Fireballs, Paralysis, Vanquishment and the Storm Atronach, plus Azra’s Grand Staff of Repulsion and Azra’s Grand Staff of Turning.

Talk to Neloth

Head back to Tel Mithryn. Neloth senses the staff before you have even opened your mouth, praises you for proving your worth and hands over a staff from his personal collection.

Rewards

  • A random leveled staff from Neloth’s collection

Tips and notes

  • Want both staffs? Put Azra’s staff on a weapon rack before speaking to Neloth. The quest can still be handed in and you keep the original.
  • Since the dungeon is random, it may be one you have already cleared, which makes for a quick trip.
  • Azra Nightwielder originally appeared in The Elder Scrolls Travels: Shadowkey.
  • Neloth has more errands for you; see also Heart Stones.
