Heart Stones is a short, repeatable Dragonborn quest for Neloth, the Telvanni wizard living in the mushroom tower of Tel Mithryn. His experiments eat through heart stones faster than he can collect them, so he is happy to pay anyone who brings him one. It is also the first step in a string of Neloth jobs on Solstheim.
How to start
After Reluctant Steward, ask Neloth whether you can help with his research. He says he is running low on heart stones and will buy one from you, or tell you where to look.
Walkthrough
Get a heart stone
According to Neloth, every eruption of Red Mountain throws more heart stones across the island. Look for impact craters and exposed rock and mine the stone out with a pickaxe. He adds, with his usual charm, that you look strong enough to manage.
You do not need to wander far. There is a heart stone vein right outside the Tel Mithryn Kitchen, just to the right of the building, which makes this one of the quickest quests in the DLC. If you already carry a heart stone, you can hand it over immediately.
Talk to Neloth
Give the stone to Neloth. He takes it, hands over some septims and the quest is done. Because the quest is repeatable, you can ask him again later and sell him another stone the same way.

- Completing it unlocks Briarheart Necropsy
Tips and notes
- A single heart stone is all it takes. Keep a spare in your pack and you can finish the quest the moment Neloth asks.
- Heart stones are tied to several other Neloth quests and to the ash creatures of the island, so mining a few extra is never wasted. In Old Friends a heart stone turns out to be the source of the attacks on Tel Mithryn.
- Neloth’s interest in heart stones leads directly into his Briarheart research and his dream of linking a living being to the power of Red Mountain.
