Stealth skill

Light Armor

Light Armor is the Stealth skill for hide, leather, elven, glass and dragonscale gear – solid protection without sacrificing speed or stamina.

Light Armor governs how well you use hide, leather, elven, glass and similar armor. Higher skill means a higher armor rating from every light piece you wear, which in turn means less physical damage taken. It is one of the Stealth skills, so the Thief Stone speeds up its progress, though it is just as much at home on an archer, a spellsword or a fast-moving warrior.

The appeal is simple: light armor weighs less than heavy plate, and with the right perks it weighs nothing at all, makes your stamina regenerate faster and can make some melee blows miss you completely. Fully perked and upgraded, light armor reaches protection levels comparable to heavy armor, so you can play a nimble character without feeling fragile.

How Light Armor works

What counts as light armor

Every piece of armor in Skyrim is either light or heavy, and this is shown in its description. The classic light sets include hide, leather, scaled, elven, glass and dragonscale, plus faction outfits such as Thieves Guild armor, Shrouded armor and Nightingale armor. Shields are also classed as light or heavy, so a glass shield is boosted by this skill, not by Block.

How the skill rises

Light Armor gains experience when you take hits while wearing light armor. You do not need a full set, but the skill only trains through actual combat damage, so a careful archer who is never touched will find it lagging behind. Characters who mix light and heavy pieces split their training accordingly.

Armor rating

The armor rating shown in your inventory is affected by the base value of each piece, your Light Armor skill, perks and Smithing improvements. Higher armor rating reduces incoming physical damage, up to the well-known cap of 80% reduction at a displayed rating of 567. Light armor does not protect against magic damage – for that you need resistance enchantments, potions or racial bonuses.

Light Armor perk tree

The Light Armor tree has 6 perks with 10 ranks in total. Required levels are the Light Armor skill level needed for each rank.

Perk Ranks Skill level Requires Effect
Agile Defender 5 0 / 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 – Rank 1: Increase armor rating for Light armor by 20%.
Rank 2: Increase armor rating for Light armor by 40%.
Rank 3: Increase armor rating for Light armor by 60%.
Rank 4: Increase armor rating for Light armor by 80%.
Rank 5: Increase armor rating for Light armor by 100%.
Custom Fit 1 30 Agile Defender 25% Armor bonus if wearing all Light Armor: head, chest, hands, feet.
Unhindered 1 50 Custom Fit Light Armor weighs nothing and doesn't slow you down when worn.
Wind Walker 1 60 Unhindered Stamina regenerates 50% faster in all Light Armor: head, chest, hands, feet.
Matching Set 1 70 Custom Fit Additional 25% Armor bonus if wearing a matched set of Light Armor.
Deft Movement 1 100 Wind Walker or Matching Set 10% chance of avoiding all damage from a melee attack while wearing all Light Armor: head, chest, hands, feet.

Perk guide

Agile Defender is the entry perk and the biggest raw boost: each rank increases the armor rating of light armor, from 20% at rank 1 to 100% at rank 5 (ranks unlock at Light Armor 20, 40, 60 and 80). Since your armor rating is your main defence, it is worth keeping these ranks current as you level.

Custom Fit (Light Armor 30) gives a 25% armor bonus when you wear light armor on head, chest, hands and feet. It is the reason to commit to a full light set rather than mixing pieces. From there the tree splits.

Unhindered (Light Armor 50) makes light armor weigh nothing and stops it slowing you down – a quality-of-life perk that leaves more carry weight for loot. Wind Walker (Light Armor 60) makes stamina regenerate 50% faster in a full light set, which is excellent for power attacks, sprinting and bow-drawing builds. Matching Set (Light Armor 70) adds a further 25% armor bonus when all four pieces come from the same set, so a full glass or full dragonscale outfit pays off. Mixing a Thieves Guild hood with a Nightingale cuirass keeps Custom Fit but loses Matching Set.

Deft Movement (Light Armor 100) gives a 10% chance to avoid all damage from a melee attack while wearing all four light pieces. It can be reached through either Matching Set or Wind Walker.

Suggested order: Agile Defender rank 1, Custom Fit, then Agile Defender ranks as they unlock, Matching Set and Wind Walker. Unhindered is a nice-to-have on the way to Wind Walker. Deft Movement is a pleasant finishing touch rather than a must. Pair the tree with Smithing to improve your set and with the Sneak perk Muffled Movement if you play stealthily.

How to level Light Armor fast

  • Wear light armor in every fight. The skill only rises when you are hit, so melee characters train it far faster than archers.
  • Let weak enemies hit you. Wolves, skeevers and mudcrabs deal little damage but still count; heal with Restoration to extend the session and train both skills.
  • Stand under the Thief Stone – Stealth skills level 20% faster while it is active.
  • Use flesh spells. Oakflesh and its stronger versions do not train Light Armor themselves, but they let you safely absorb more hits while training.
  • Train with the experts: Scouts-Many-Marshes in Windhelm teaches up to 50, Grelka in Riften up to 75 and Nazir of the Dark Brotherhood up to 90.
  • Read the skill books, such as Ice and Chitin and The Rear Guard, for free skill increases.

Trainers

Trainer Trains up to Notes
Scouts-Many-Marshes Journeyman (up to 50)
Grelka Expert (up to 75)
Nazir Master (up to 90)

Each trainer can teach up to five levels per character level, and training costs more gold the higher your skill is.

Light Armor skill books

Reading each of these books for the first time raises Light Armor by one level:

Tips and notes

  • Custom Fit, Wind Walker and Deft Movement only check head, chest, hands and feet – a shield is not required.
  • A full set of upgraded and perked dragonscale or glass armor can reach the 567 armor rating cap, so further investment in Agile Defender beyond that point gives no extra protection.
  • Unhindered makes light armor a better choice than heavy armor for characters who loot everything in sight – the armor stops counting against carry weight.
