Vale Deer Hide

Vale Deer Hide is the Dawnguard variant of deer hide, taken from the pale deer of the Forgotten Vale and tanned into Leather.

Vale Deer Hide (Dawnguard) comes from the white-coated deer that wander the Forgotten Vale, the hidden snowy valley you reach during the Dawnguard questline. It is worth 10 gold, weighs 2 and tans into 2 Leather, exactly like a normal Deer Hide. In other words: the scenery is fancier, the leather is not. It has no other crafting use, so it is either leather or vendor fodder.

How to get it

Hunt the vale deer in the Forgotten Vale. They behave like ordinary deer and bolt the moment they notice you, so a bow and a bit of Sneak go a long way. The game also places 4 loose hides outdoors near the Vale, so you can pick some up even if the deer outrun you.

There are no merchants that sell it and no NPCs that carry it, so once you have left the Vale for good your supply is whatever you brought back. Thankfully regular deer hide does exactly the same job. If you are already carrying a pile of loot out of the Vale, tanning on the spot is not an option, so either drop the hides in a container or haul them to the nearest rack once you are back in Skyrim proper.
