Jouane Manette is an old Breton living out his twilight years in Rorikstead. (The game files call his race “Elder”, but Lemkil calls him a Breton to his face.) He is the closest friend of Rorik, the man who owns the land and gave the village its name.
Where to find them
Around Rorikstead, chatting with the villagers, unless he is off to Whiterun on errands – he seems to make the trip regularly, selling wheat and picking up things for his neighbours.
Personality & relationships
During the Great War, Rorik fought for the Empire and was badly wounded by an Aldmeri soldier. Jouane, then a healer, saved his life. The two became as close as kinsmen, and when Rorik came home, Jouane came with him. He still helps run things: Rorik admits he doesn’t know where he’d be without him.
Jouane is a kindly sort. He offers to buy dresses for Lemkil’s daughters (Lemkil rudely refuses), brings fine silver brushes back for Reldith, asks Erik if he needs anything from the city, and nudges you to talk to Erik about his dreams of adventure.
His big secret is Sissel: he is quietly teaching her magic, and insists the rest of the village must not find out. She begs for fire spells; he refuses and starts her off on putting candles out, and later teaches her Waterbreathing.
Ask him why Rorikstead’s farms do so well in such a harsh climate and he insists there’s no secret, just hard work, luck and the gods – though Rorik wonders aloud if some other force might be involved. On dragons, he admits a village of farmers has no real defence.
Good to know
- If you kill Jouane, Lemkil sends you a letter offering paid work for someone willing to use force. The follow-up job is broken and never completes.
