Pilgrim’s Trench

Underwater graveyard of four shipwrecks in the Sea of Ghosts northwest of Winterhold, marked by a small island with Trius’ Camp and full of leveled chests.

Pilgrim’s Trench is a cluster of four shipwrecks lying on the seabed of the Sea of Ghosts, northwest of Winterhold. From the surface you mostly see a small island with Trius’ Camp on it and a capsized rowboat bobbing above the wrecks. The real attraction is down below: several sunken ships with chests full of random leveled loot, waiting for anyone willing to get very cold and very wet.

What you’ll find

  • Four wrecked ships scattered across the sea floor, with several chests aboard.
  • Trius’ Camp on the little island that marks the spot, plus a capsized rowboat floating directly above the wrecks – the easiest landmark for knowing where to dive.
  • Salmon swimming around the wrecks, which have apparently become a handy reef.
  • A lone anglerfish hiding under a rocky overhang in the deepest part.

Notable items

Nothing unique is listed here – the chests on the wrecks hold random leveled loot. It is a treasure-diving trip rather than a quest destination, so treat it as a lucky dip.

Tips

Bring a way to breathe underwater. Argonians can just swim down and loot at leisure; everyone else should pack a Waterbreathing spell or potion, or wear a helmet enchanted with waterbreathing. Without it, you will be doing the classic Skyrim routine of diving, opening one chest, panicking and racing back up for air.

Good to know

The game files reveal that Trius was once meant to be a bandit mage camping on the island. He would have asked you to fetch a small jewellery box from the wrecks below in a quest called Trius’ Trinket, and taught you a spell in return. The quest was never finished, so today the camp is a quiet reminder of content that did not make it into the game.
