Illusion Ritual Spell is the master-level Illusion quest at the College of Winterhold in Winterhold. Drevis Neloren, the College’s Master Wizard of Illusion, will not simply hand over his most powerful spells; instead he hides four books around the College that can only be seen with a special spell. Find them all and the master tier of Illusion opens up to you.
How to start
- Skill requirement: The quest is intended for Illusion skill 90. Because of a dialogue bug, Drevis only offers it in practice once your Illusion is at 100, so plan accordingly.
- Expert tier first: Ritual spell quests are the step after the Expert spells of a school, which Drevis also sells, so most characters reaching this point will already be casting Expert Illusion.
- Talk to Drevis Neloren in the Hall of Countenance and choose the new third dialogue option about mastering Illusion.
- Some players report the option only appears after completing Drevis’s other quest, Out of Balance.
Walkthrough
Learn Vision of the Tenth Eye
Drevis teaches you Vision of the Tenth Eye, a novice-level spell. The four Master Illusion texts are invisible and cannot be picked up unless this spell is active, so cast it whenever you reach one of the locations below.
Hall of Attainment
Climb the stairs to the second floor. The book lies under the bench on the left at the landing.
Hall of Countenance
Go upstairs to the second floor and enter the first room on the right, a storage room full of crates and barrels. The book sits on a barrel near the back.
The Arcanaeum
Pass through the archway into the main library. Before you reach the three steps down into the centre, turn left into the outer ring. The book is on the first table with two chairs on the right-hand side (on the west side of the outer ring), sometimes on the floor in front of the nearby bookcase. It shares the table with the book The Legend of Red Eagle.
The Midden
Descend into the Midden beneath the College. The book is in the middle of the table to the left of the Atronach Forge.
Return to Drevis
Bring all four books back to Drevis. He takes them from your inventory and gives you a master-level Illusion spell tome in return.
Rewards
- One master-level Illusion spell tome from Drevis.
- Access to the remaining master Illusion spells, which become available for purchase from Drevis. The four master spells are Call to Arms, Harmony, Hysteria and Mayhem.
- The novice spell Vision of the Tenth Eye.
Tips and notes
- The books only physically exist while Vision of the Tenth Eye is active. If you put an item where a book should be, it sits on the surface and clips into the book when you cast the spell.
- If you have Arniel’s Endeavor active while hunting the books, one of the texts may not be in its usual spot.
- Do not let a follower pick up a book – it may be flagged as stolen.
- If you make Illusion Legendary after starting the quest, Drevis may lose the option to take the books. Raising the skill back to 90 or higher fixes it.
- This is one of only two master spell quests that take place entirely inside the College; the other is Conjuration Ritual Spell.
