Hunter and Hunted

Heal the wounded hunter Valdr outside Moss Mother Cavern, then clear the spriggans and bear inside so he can recover his friends’ bodies.

Hunter and Hunted is a short miscellaneous quest in Falkreath Hold. Valdr, a hunter from Falkreath, followed a bear into Moss Mother Cavern with two companions. They had the sow cornered when three spriggans appeared out of nowhere – and now Valdr sits bleeding outside, the only survivor.

How to start

  • Travel to Moss Mother Cavern. Valdr sits on a log just outside the entrance, calling for help. Talk to him.
  • You may also have heard about Valdr’s hunting party earlier from Valga Vinicia, owner of the Dead Man’s Drink in Falkreath, which adds the objective to locate the hunters.

Walkthrough

Locate Valdr’s hunting party

Valdr explains who he is and what happened: the spriggans killed his two fellow hunters and he barely escaped, badly hurt. He wants the cave cleared so he can reach his fallen friends.

Heal Valdr’s injuries

Give Valdr a healing potion or cast a healing spell such as Healing Hands on him. Even Courage works, because it slightly raises his health. Do not skip this step: if you go in and clear the cave without healing him first, he will be dead when you come back and the quest cannot be completed.

Clear out Moss Mother Cavern

Once healed, Valdr asks you to deal with the spriggans. You can take him along or tell him to wait outside. Inside are three spriggans and one bear. The bear and one spriggan are near the entrance, while the other two spriggans lurk by the pool deeper in. You can fight them one at a time, but making too much noise may draw the others in.

Return to Valdr

If Valdr waited outside, go back and talk to him. He gives you Valdr’s Lucky Dagger, then tends to his friends’ bodies before heading home to Falkreath.

Rewards

  • Valdr’s Lucky Dagger

Tips and notes

  • The quest can be failed: Valdr dies if you clear the cave without healing him, and if he dies for any reason the quest cannot be finished.
  • If Valdr survives, he invites you to visit him at his home in Falkreath – even though he does not actually own a house there.
  • Followers may drop down as if injured when the quest is accepted.
  • One of the dead “hunters” in the cave is, according to the game data, actually a bandit.
  • If Valdr will not take your potion, try a healing spell instead.

Objectives

Locate Valdr’s hunting party
Heal Valdr’s injuries
Clear out Moss Mother Cavern
Return to Valdr (if told to wait)

Walkthrough

Choices & consequences

Valdr can come with you into the cave or wait outside.

Known bugs & fixes

Valdr may only accept standard healing potions or be impossible to interact with; a healing spell often helps. Getting the lead from Valga Vinicia first can make Valdr skip ahead and leave the quest stuck in the journal.
