Kjenstag Ruins

Small Nordic ruin east of Morthal where a ghost appears at night and leads you to tomb robbers – and can drop a full set of Ancient Nord Armor.

Kjenstag Ruins is a modest scatter of ancient Nordic stonework east of Morthal. By day there is not much here beyond a single chest with minor leveled loot. Come back after dark, however, and the ruins get a lot more interesting: a ghost rises and hurries off toward a tomb that someone is busy robbing.

What you’ll find

  • One chest with minor leveled loot – nice, but hardly the main attraction.
  • A ghost that appears between 8:00 pm and 4:00 am and runs a short distance to a small tomb.
  • A pair of bandits robbing that tomb.
  • Inside the tomb: a dead draugr, a piece of leveled jewelry, an iron shield and a weak leveled enchanted weapon.

Notable items

  • A full set of Ancient Nord Armor, reportedly obtainable by killing the ghost while it runs toward the bandits.
  • Leveled jewelry and a minor enchanted weapon in the robbed tomb.

Tips

Wait outside the ruins rather than inside, then walk in once it is past 8:00 pm – the ghost should be there. If it does not show up, try using a shout in the middle of the ruins; that is said to wake it up. Follow closely, because the ghost can occasionally vanish while you are trailing it.

Players note that the Ancient Nord Armor trick works very early, even before you set foot in Whiterun and at a level as low as 7. It is a solid upgrade for a fresh character who wandered north instead of following the main quest. The ghost may not appreciate being mugged, but the bandits were going to rob somebody tonight anyway.

Good to know

The ruins themselves are not a dungeon you can clear – the fun here is entirely in the night-time encounter, so set your wait timer accordingly.
