Philter of the Phantom

Philter of the Phantom is a unique Skyrim potion that turns the drinker spectral for 30 seconds, found only in Shroud Hearth Barrow.

Philter of the Phantom is an unusual potion that gives the drinker a ghostly look. For 30 seconds after drinking it, the Dragonborn appears spectral, and the active effects menu lists the effect as “Ghostveil.” It cannot be brewed and is not part of any leveled potion family. Every bottle in the game comes from a single place and a single person: Wyndelius Gatharian in Shroud Hearth Barrow.

Effects

  • Appear spectral for 30 seconds (shown as Ghostveil in active effects)
  • Weight 0.5, base value 50
  • Form ID 000663e1

Where to find it

Shroud Hearth Barrow lies right next to Ivarstead, and it is the only location where this potion can be obtained. Wyndelius Gatharian lives inside, and you have a few ways to get his philters:

  • Loot his body. He carries one or two bottles, along with a little gold, an iron or steel dagger and his fur clothes.
  • Search the room where he lived. One or more bottles sit there separately from what he carries, including one on his table.
  • Pickpocket him. If you leave him alive, a new Philter of the Phantom can be lifted from him each time his inventory respawns. Emptying his pockets entirely, which needs the Perfect Touch perk of the Pickpocket skill, may be required to make that restock happen.

Good to know

Because it is so rare, Philter of the Phantom is mostly a curiosity. Its only listed effect is the spectral look, and with a value of 50 gold it is not a money-maker either. If you want a steady supply, sparing Wyndelius and returning to pick his pocket is the only repeatable source.

Where to find it

  • Carried by Wyndelius Gatharian in Shroud Hearth Barrow near Ivarstead (one or two).
  • One or more in his living quarters, including one on his table.
  • Can be pickpocketed from him again whenever his inventory respawns.
