Hulking Draugr

A dark-skinned, heavily built draugr from the Dragonborn add-on that wields an axe and shield and can use Unrelenting Force.

The Hulking Draugr is a beefier relative of the ordinary draugr, added by the Dragonborn expansion. It is one of the sturdier undead you can meet in an ancient Nord burial chamber, and with 800 health it is not something to underestimate. You will only start bumping into it once your character is high enough in level, when it can join the ranks of the dead waking up in Nordic tombs.

The easiest way to tell it apart is its skin. Where most draugr are a pale, ashen grey, the Hulking Draugr is dark brown. Its gear is different too: leather and furs stitched together, a metal waist piece, a big shoulder pauldron with larger and more pronounced shoulder pads, and a ragged lower half. As a grisly finishing touch it wears a necklace strung with human hands. This armour is unique to the creature and cannot be looted.

Where to find them

Hulking Draugr are not tied to one location. At higher levels they can spawn in any Nordic tomb, so almost any barrow you clear later in the game may hold one among its regular undead. They usually carry an Ancient Nord War Axe and a Dented Iron Shield, a weaker take on the standard iron shield.

Notes

Hulking Draugr are flagged as respawning, so a tomb you emptied earlier can hold a fresh one when its occupants return. Their stats are well above the rank-and-file dead: level 26, 800 health and 505 stamina, with a Common soul that fits a common soul gem or better. Despite coming from Dragonborn, nothing ties them to Solstheim; the source places them in Nordic tombs generally.

Other higher-tier undead you are likely to face in the same tombs include the Draugr Overlord and the Draugr Deathlord.

Abilities & attacks

  • One-handed melee attacks, usually with an Ancient Nord War Axe
  • Blocks with a Dented Iron Shield
  • Unrelenting Force shout

How to beat it

The Hulking Draugr wants to fight up close with axe and shield, and it can knock you back with Unrelenting Force, so avoid fighting it near ledges. Fire is your friend, while frost is a poor choice. Offensive Restoration that harms undead, such as Stendarr’s Aura or the sword Dawnbreaker, works very well. Its 800 health makes it a long fight, so keep potions ready.
