Auriel’s Shield is a unique heavy shield from the Dawnguard DLC and, according to Altmer myth, a gift from Anu to the god Auriel alongside Auriel’s Bow. It is one of the toughest shields in the game, with a base armor rating of 32, and its power bashes are enhanced in a way no normal shield can match.
How to get it
The shield is carried by a Falmer Warmonger in the Forgotten Vale, the hidden valley you reach through Darkfall Cave during the Dawnguard quest Touching the Sky.
- Reach the Forgotten Vale during Touching the Sky.
- Head southwest to a set of ruins where Falmer and frost trolls are fighting each other.
- Kill the Falmer Warmonger and loot the shield from him.
Bring fire and some patience: the Vale is full of Falmer, chaurus and trolls, and the Warmonger is usually not alone.
Is it worth wearing?
For a shield-bashing warrior, yes. Its base armor rating of 32 at 13 weight is very high for a shield, and players use its empowered power bash to great effect. It does not carry a regular enchantment, so you cannot disenchant it, and the game data lists no tempering material, so do not expect to improve it at a workbench.
Compared with the Shield of Ysgramor it trades passive magic resistance and health for raw armor and a stronger bash. Pair it with the bow for a full set of Auriel’s relics on your wall, even if you never fight with both.
Good to know
- Dawnguard DLC only.
- Auriel’s Shield and Auriel’s Bow both come from the same myth about Anu’s gifts to Auriel.
- Many player homes have a display spot that fits it nicely.
