Valerica is the wife of Lord Harkon and mother of Serana. When Harkon became obsessed with a prophecy that would require their daughter’s blood, Valerica decided enough was enough.
Background
She sealed Serana and one Elder Scroll inside Dimhollow Crypt to keep her safe, then fled to the Soul Cairn – a realm of trapped souls – with a second Elder Scroll. Harkon’s court searched for her for a long time and eventually gave up. Valerica’s view was that vampires survive by staying in the shadows, and that Harkon’s plan would draw far too much attention.
Role in Dawnguard
In the Dawnguard questline you and Serana travel to the Soul Cairn to find her. Valerica is proud, prickly and not thrilled to see her daughter in the company of a stranger – but she’s the key to the Elder Scroll you need, as long as you can bring down the barrier around her.
