Message to Whiterun

Message to Whiterun in Skyrim: deliver an ultimatum to Jarl Balgruuf and force Whiterun to pick a side in the civil war. Walkthrough for both factions.

Objectives

  1. Deliver the message (or axe) to the Jarl of Whiterun
  2. Assist Jarl Balgruuf with the dragon threat
  3. Wait for the Jarl's response
  4. Legion: deliver the axe to Ulfric and warn the Jarl
  5. Stormcloaks: wait for orders from Ulfric

Message to Whiterun forces Jarl Balgruuf off the fence. Whiterun sits right in the middle of Skyrim, and neither side can win the war without it.

Walkthrough

  • Stormcloaks: deliver Ulfric’s axe to Balgruuf in Dragonsreach – a declaration of war in Nord terms. Balgruuf refuses to surrender the city, and Ulfric prepares to attack.
  • Imperial Legion: deliver Tullius‘ message. Balgruuf agrees to accept a Legion garrison, then sends you to Windhelm with his reply to Ulfric. Ulfric answers by marching on Whiterun – return and warn the Jarl.

You’ll need to have finished Dragon Rising before the battle can start.
