The Black Star is Azura’s Daedric quest. Her priestess Aranea Ienith has foreseen your arrival at the Shrine of Azura, south of Winterhold, and sends you after the Prince’s stolen artifact.
The story
Years ago, the mage Malyn Varen was exiled from the College of Winterhold after experimenting with Azura’s Star. He wanted to trap his own soul in it to cheat death – and succeeded, at the cost of his sanity. His former apprentice Nelacar, now living at the Frozen Hearth in Winterhold, can tell you where to find the star: the half-sunken ruin of Ilinalta’s Deep.
The big choice
Once you have the broken star, you decide who gets it:
- Aranea – Azura cleanses it and you receive Azura’s Star (white souls). Aranea also becomes available as a follower.
- Nelacar – he alters it into the Black Star (black and white souls).
Either way, you enter the star itself to destroy Malyn Varen’s soul.
