Throat of the World

The Throat of the World is the highest mountain in Tamriel – home of the Greybeards, the dragon Paarthurnax and the Time-Wound where Alduin was banished.

The Throat of the World is the tallest mountain in Tamriel, rising from the middle of Skyrim and visible from almost everywhere. On its slopes stands High Hrothgar, the monastery of the Greybeards, and on its summit lives their master, the dragon Paarthurnax.

The summit

The path from High Hrothgar to the summit is blocked by a deadly unnatural storm. Only the Clear Skies Shout, taught by the Greybeards in The Throat of the World, can push it away. At the top you find:

  • Paarthurnax, perched on an ancient Word Wall.
  • A Word Wall where Paarthurnax teaches you Fire Breath.
  • The Time-Wound – a shimmering scar in time, left when the ancient Nords used an Elder Scroll to cast Alduin out of the world.

Role in the story

This is where the heroes of old fought Alduin in the Dragon War – and where you face him for the first time in Alduin’s Bane, after reading the Elder Scroll at the Time-Wound. It is also where you return at the very end of the main quest.

Good to know

The view from the summit is one of the best in the game. Take a moment.
