The Mage Stone is a standing stone and one of the three Guardian Stones – the very first stones a new Dragonborn gets to choose between. It stands southwest of Riverwood and north-northwest of Helgen, close to the river. If your character concept involves more fireballs than broadswords, this is your stone.
What you’ll find
- The Mage Stone itself, standing together with The Warrior Stone and The Thief Stone.
- Effect: all magic skills are learned 20% faster.
- The magic skills it covers: Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Enchanting, Illusion and Restoration.
Quests
After Unbound, keep following Ralof or Hadvar on the road out of Helgen and they lead you straight to the stones.
Who it suits
Any build that leans on spells gets something out of it: battle mages throwing Destruction, summoners living off Conjuration, sneaky Illusion users, healers deep in Restoration, and crafters grinding Enchanting for better gear. Alteration covers the protective and utility side of things. Because the stone speeds up all six at once, it rewards characters who mix several schools rather than sticking to just one. Pure warriors and archers, on the other hand, are better served by the Mage Stone’s two neighbours.
Tips
Pick the Mage Stone if you plan to lean on spells, enchanting or healing – six skills is a lot of coverage. Since the three stones stand side by side, comparing them takes about ten seconds, and the other two are right there if your mage turns out to love two-handed axes after all. Your escort won’t judge – well, not much: they just shrug and say each to their own.
Good to know
All three Guardian Stones stand in one spot, so this is the one place in Skyrim where choosing a sign is a matter of a few steps rather than a long trek. It is also one of the first landmarks most players reach after the chaos of Helgen – a calm riverside stop before the road down into Riverwood.
