Belethor’s General Goods is a general store in the Plains District of Whiterun, right on the marketplace next to Arcadia’s Cauldron. Even the city guards call the owner sleazy, but they also admit his stock is good, and he’ll buy almost anything you drag in – which makes this one of the most useful shops for an early-game adventurer with an overloaded pack.
What you’ll find
- Belethor, the owner, assisted by Sigurd. The shop is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm.
- A typical general-goods trade list: weapons, armour, jewellery, potions, food and books, with roughly 750 gold to spend every 48 hours.
- A ground-floor shop with a counter of wares, a hearth with an elk head above it and cupboards full of goods, including the full three-volume Biography of Barenziah and a copy of Uncommon Taste.
- A small back kitchen with a second hearth and a rear door outside.
- Upstairs: a balcony with a business ledger, a strongbox by the bed and a sparse master bedroom.
- A thieves’ “loot” shadowmark to the right of the entrance.
Notable items
- Speech skill book Biography of the Wolf Queen in the cupboard left of the counter.
Tips
With the Investor perk in Speech you can invest 500 gold in the shop; after that, most of the items lying around can be taken instead of stolen. Belethor’s broad buying list makes him the go-to fence-free dump for random loot, though his purse refills only every two days. If the front door is locked during opening hours, try the back door, or step away and wait an hour before trying again.
Good to know
Belethor talks in his sleep, so a night-time break-in comes with free entertainment. If he ever meets an untimely end, Ysolda may take over the business – she really does want to own something in this town.
