Dragonsreach Dungeon is the prison beneath Dragonsreach in Whiterun, where anyone breaking the law in Whiterun Hold ends up. As the guards like to point out, they’ll happily drag you down here themselves. It doubles as quarters for part of the city guard, and you’ll visit it either as a guest of the jarl or while running errands that need a word with an inmate.
What you’ll find
- An entrance area with the Prisoner Belongings and Evidence chests holding your confiscated gear.
- A main cell block with adept-locked cells on both sides and a door at the far end leading up into Dragonsreach.
- A surprisingly plush western cell stocked with food and small luxuries – reserved for well-connected troublemakers sleeping off a binge.
- Guard barracks connected by an underground passage.
Quests
- Side with Saadia against the Alik’r and you’ll come here to question their jailed warrior. Pay his fine and he reveals that his leader Kematu is waiting at Swindler’s Den west of Whiterun.
- During the Thieves Guild quest Imitation Amnesty, a prisoner named Arn is held here.
Tips
Landed in a cell? Look for the loose grate in the floor and pick it. The passage below runs past a grate where you can reach the belongings and evidence chests, so you can grab your gear on the way out, and it ends in the guard barracks. The cell door can be picked too, but it’s a harder lock and guards who see you walk out will attack. If you are caught escaping, expect a fight – and Irileth, who can’t be killed, often joins in. In short: escape quietly or serve your time with dignity.
Good to know
Reportedly, shouting a few times from your cell can make a guard unlock the door just to ask you to stop – an opportunity some players gleefully use to stroll out. Use your newfound freedom wisely.
