Culling the Beast

A repeatable Volkihar job: Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi sends you to destroy a powerful vampire at a random location.

Culling the Beast is a repeatable radiant quest from the Dawnguard expansion, given to members of the Volkihar Clan. Either Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi at Castle Volkihar points you toward a strong, leveled vampire who has set up shop somewhere in Skyrim. It turns out vampire society has its own pest-control problem, and you are the exterminator.

How to start

  • Join the Volkihar Clan and be a vampire.
  • Finish The Bloodstone Chalice.
  • Ask Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi in Castle Volkihar whether they have work for you.

Walkthrough

Leave the castle

Head out of Castle Volkihar and take the boat back to the mainland, which drops you at Icewater Jetty. If you have already discovered the target location, you can fast travel straight there instead.

Destroy the vampire

The target is a boss-level vampire holed up in a radiant location together with its allies. Possible lairs include:

Fight your way to the leveled vampire and kill it, along with anyone defending it. Vampire lairs tend to be crowded, so it pays to clear the entourage carefully rather than charging the boss head on.

Report back

Return to Castle Volkihar and speak to whoever gave you the job to collect your reward.

Rewards

  • 3 Potions of Blood.

Tips and notes

  • If Redwater Den is the target and you already cleared it during The Bloodstone Chalice, the key you took from the dealer opens the secret entrance behind the counter. That shortcut spares you the full dungeon, and the key also helps if you cannot pick the lock.
  • Because the quest is repeatable, it is a steady source of Potions of Blood. Other Volkihar radiant quests include Ancient Power, New Allegiances and Rings of Blood Magic.
  • Players siding with the Dawnguard get vampire-hunting jobs of their own from Isran‘s people at Fort Dawnguard, such as Hide and Seek.
